Understanding Why Your Garage Smells Bad

Garage odors fall into two broad families, and telling them apart is the first step. Organic smells, decay, ammonia, or musty, almost always mean a pest: a dead animal, rodent urine, or mold on stored materials. Chemical smells, gasoline, oil, solvents, or exhaust, usually trace to stored automotive products or a vehicle leak. The two have nothing to do with each other and need completely different responses.

If the smell is sharp, solventy, or fuel-like, check stored containers, the car, and the floor for an automotive fluid leak before assuming pests. If it's biological, rotting, urine-like, or musty, you're dealing with a pest or moisture issue. A simple rule of thumb: chemical smells are usually constant and tied to a container or the vehicle, while organic smells worsen over days and often draw flies.

Dead Animal in the Garage Ceiling

One of the most common calls we get is a sudden, strong decay smell in a garage with no visible source. The usual answer is an animal that died inside the garage ceiling cavity or a wall, often a rodent that entered through a gap and nested in the insulation. Because the carcass is sealed inside the structure, no amount of cleaning the floor or airing the space out will help: see dead animal odor. It has to be located and removed.
